Google's AI Overviews cite Yelp and ApartmentRatings for apartments. Claim and complete both.

Google AI Overviews cited a local directory or review site in 14% of its answers about apartment communities over the last 90 days, and Yelp in 9%. Almost all of it came from two sites, ApartmentRatings and Yelp. Here is where directories show up, why apartments differ from restaurants and shops, and how to claim the profiles that count.

Key findings

  • Google's AI Overviews use directories. They cited a local directory or review site in 14% of their answers about apartment communities over the last 90 days, and Yelp in 9%.
  • Two sites carry almost all of it. ApartmentRatings (0.7% of all the sources ChatGPT and AI Overviews cited) and Yelp (0.7%). Chamber of commerce member pages appeared too, at 0.1%.
  • ChatGPT is different. No ChatGPT answer about an apartment community linked a Yelp page in our measurements, although Yelp says it supplies business details to ChatGPT, and an outside study found Yelp in 80% of ChatGPT's answers about local businesses in general.
  • Claim and complete both. Match your details exactly, reply to reviews, and never ask for reviews on Yelp, which forbids it.

HaloScore data

Google AI Overviews cite a local directory in 14% of their apartment answers

HaloScore puts the questions renters ask to the major AI engines every month and records every source each answer cites. For this article we sorted 90 days of those sources by kind and picked out the local directories and renter review sites: Yelp, ApartmentRatings, chamber of commerce member pages, MapQuest and the like.

A small share of sources, but Google's AI Overviews use them. Over the last 90 days, local directories and review sites were 1.7% of the sources ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cited in answers about apartment communities, and 6% of their answers cited at least one. AI Overviews cited one in 14% of its answers, and Yelp in 9%. ChatGPT cited one in 3%, and none of its answers linked a Yelp page.

Two sites carry almost all of it. ApartmentRatings was 0.7% of all the sources cited and Yelp 0.7%, counting Yelp's own search pages, such as "the best 10 apartments near...". Chamber of commerce member pages appeared too, at 0.1%: in some towns, the local chamber's member directory was cited for the communities listed in it. Every other directory together (MapQuest, Birdeye, Nextdoor and the like) came to 0.2%, and the Better Business Bureau almost never appeared.

They show up most when renters look closely at a community. When renters compared two communities, directories and review sites were 4.1% of the sources cited, and 2.7% on questions about a specific fact. On "best apartments in..." questions they were 1.4%.

These figures show where the AI engines look. They do not show that claiming a profile wins recommendations: we have not measured that link.

Key takeaway

For apartments, the directories worth your time are the ones Google's AI Overviews cite, and that is mostly ApartmentRatings and Yelp, not the long list of general directories.

The research

For local businesses in general, directories are major sources; apartments have the listing sites

Across local businesses, Yelp leads the directories. BrightLocal's August 2026 study of AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT answers about 1,355 business locations in the US, the UK and Australia found that "Yelp makes up 8.53% of all citations, with increased usage on ChatGPT results", and that Yelp "appeared as a source in 80% of all answers from ChatGPT." It adds that "legacy online directories like Better Business Bureau (BBB), Angi's list, and MapQuest are regularly cited as sources."[1] About a fifth of the locations were restaurants, and none of the categories it reports is apartments.

Apartments have their own directories: the listing sites. For renter questions, listing sites carry most of what AI engines cite (57% in our measurements), which leaves general directories a smaller role than they play for a restaurant or a plumber.

ChatGPT may use Yelp without linking to it. Yelp says it has a "content integration, which provides ChatGPT users with reliable local recommendations by surfacing Yelp's trusted reviews, ratings, photos, and business details directly within the chat experience."[2] We read ChatGPT through OpenAI's web search, and no answer about an apartment community linked a Yelp page. ChatGPT may still draw on Yelp's data where no link appears, so a complete Yelp profile can matter there too.

Each directory has its own rules. Claiming a Yelp page is free, and "a claimed page does not mean that the business is an advertiser with Yelp."[3] Yelp forbids asking for reviews: "Don't ask anyone to review your business, be it customers, mailing list subscribers, friends, family, etc."[4] ApartmentRatings works differently. Its Manager Center lets managers "respond directly to residents' opinions with designation as a verified manager", community details can be kept current by sharing your data with it from your listing-site portal, and it encourages managers "to seek feedback from their residents via reviews", without incentives of any kind.[5]

Key takeaway

Directory advice written for local businesses in general can overstate their role for apartments, where the listing sites already do that job and two review sites carry most of the rest.

The takeaway

Claim ApartmentRatings and Yelp, keep them matching, and skip the rest

Directories are a short job for apartments. Three points to plan around:

  1. 01Two sites are worth the time.ApartmentRatings and Yelp are the directories AI engines cite for apartments; general directories rarely appear.
  2. 02Google's AI Overviews use them most, especially when a renter is comparing your community with another, and ChatGPT may use Yelp's data without linking to it.
  3. 03Claim, match and reply.Claim the profile, match your details exactly, and reply to reviews within each site's rules.

How to do it

Yelp, ApartmentRatings, and your chamber listing

  • Claim your Yelp page. It is free and does not make you an advertiser.[3] Match the community name, street address, leasing phone, website and hours exactly to your Google Business Profile and your listing sites, and add current photos.
  • Reply to Yelp reviews, and never ask for them. Yelp forbids asking anyone for a review, including your mailing list and people who have just filled in a feedback survey.[4]
  • Set up ApartmentRatings' Manager Center. Reply to reviews as the verified manager, and turn on data sharing with ApartmentRatings in your listing-site portal so its details stay current. You may invite residents to review you there, but never with an incentive.[5]
  • Complete your chamber of commerce listing if you are a member. Use the same name, address and phone, and link your website. It is not a reason to join on its own.
  • Leave the rest for later. MapQuest, Nextdoor, the Better Business Bureau and other general directories rarely appear for apartments in our measurements. Where you already have a profile, keep its details matching.
  • See what the AI engines cite for you. Search Google for your community's name and for a comparison with a neighbor, ask ChatGPT the same, and note which directories and review sites the answers link.

Questions

Common questions

Does ChatGPT use Yelp?

Yelp says it supplies reviews, ratings, photos and business details to ChatGPT through a content integration.[2] In our measurements, no ChatGPT answer about an apartment community linked a Yelp page, so if ChatGPT uses Yelp for apartments, it does so without linking to it. A complete, accurate Yelp profile covers both cases.

Should we join the chamber of commerce for this?

Not for AI visibility alone. Chamber member pages were 0.1% of the sources AI engines cited for apartments in our measurements. If you are already a member, complete the listing.

Can we ask residents to review us on Yelp?

No. Yelp forbids asking anyone for a review, and says that asking "may hurt your Yelp rating because our automated software may not recommend reviews that seem to be prompted or encouraged by the business."[4] ApartmentRatings does allow you to ask, as long as you never offer an incentive.[5]
