AI engines rarely cite Reddit for apartments, except when renters compare communities

Since August, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cited Reddit in 3% of their answers about apartment communities, and in 15% of their answers when a renter compared two communities. Almost all of it came from local city and town subreddits. Here is where Reddit shows up, how fast its share is changing, and how to take part the way Reddit's own rules ask.

Key findings

  • A small share of what AI engines cite. Since August, Reddit was 0.8% of the sources ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cited for apartment communities, and appeared in 3% of their answers.
  • Comparisons are where it shows up. When a renter compared two communities, 15% of answers cited Reddit.
  • Local subreddits, not apartment ones. Almost every Reddit thread cited came from a city, town or neighborhood subreddit.
  • A moving target. For the same communities, Reddit appeared in 12% of answers in July and 5% since August. Take part as a neighbor would, never with planted or paid posts.

HaloScore data

Reddit appears in 3% of AI answers about apartments, and more when renters compare

HaloScore puts the questions renters ask to the major AI engines every month and records every source each answer cites. For this article we picked out every Reddit thread ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cited in answers about apartment communities since August 1.

A small share of sources. Reddit was 0.8% of the sources the two AI engines cited, against 63% for the listing sites. 3% of their answers cited at least one Reddit thread: 3% of ChatGPT's and 3% of Google AI Overviews'. Answers that named the community we were measuring cited Reddit at much the same rate, 3%.

Comparisons are where it shows up. When a renter asked the AI engines to compare two communities, 15% of the answers cited Reddit. On "best apartments in..." questions it was 3%, on questions about a lifestyle or amenity 2%, and on questions about a specific fact, such as the pet policy or parking, 1%. A comparison is where a renter wants to hear from people who live there, and that is what Reddit threads offer.

Local subreddits, not apartment ones. 87% of the Reddit threads cited came from a city, town or neighborhood subreddit, the kind where people ask what an area is like. Subreddits about housing, renting or moving were 5%, and the rest came from communities for a large local employer or university, where people relocating ask where to live.

A moving target. Reddit appeared more often in the summer. For the communities we measured both in July and since August, 12% of the answers in July cited Reddit, against 5% since August. Studies of AI answers in general saw a sharp drop in ChatGPT's Reddit citations in August (see the research below).

These figures show where the AI engines look. They do not show that taking part on Reddit wins recommendations: we have not measured that link.

Key takeaway

For apartments, Reddit is a small source that matters most when a renter is choosing between two communities, and almost all of it comes from local subreddits.

The research

Reddit's share of AI citations has fallen in 2026, most of all on ChatGPT

ChatGPT all but stopped linking Reddit in August. Promptwatch, which tracks the sources AI engines cite across all topics, measured Reddit at a steady share of ChatGPT's citations through early August 2026, then a collapse: "the August 14-17 average of 0.52% is a 86.4% relative drop." It adds that "a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional."[1] By its October report, covering September 28 to October 4, Reddit had fallen "from 5.19% to 0.09%" of ChatGPT's citations, while on Google AI Overviews it held at 2.15%.[2]

For local businesses, Reddit is cited widely but thinly. BrightLocal's August 2026 study of AI answers about 1,355 local businesses found Reddit was 1.79% of all citations, yet it was cited at least once for 88.86% of the businesses.[3] Apartments are not one of the categories it reports.

Google and OpenAI both have direct access to Reddit's content. Google announced in February 2024 that it "now has access to Reddit's Data API",[4] and Reddit announced in May 2024 that "OpenAI will access Reddit's Data API".[5] So an AI engine can draw on Reddit without linking to it, and a share of citations measures only the links.

Reddit's rules are clear about businesses. Reddit asks everyone to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation)", and to "not intentionally mislead others or impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner."[6] For businesses specifically: "If your contributions to Reddit consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from, please be thoughtful about the frequency of posting."[7] Reddit Pro, its set of tools for finding relevant conversations, "is free to use for eligible businesses and organizations."[8]

Key takeaway

Reddit's place in AI answers changes from month to month, which makes it a community to be useful in rather than a channel to plan around.

The takeaway

Take part where renters already ask, as a neighbor would

Reddit is a long-term reputation play for apartments, not a fast route into AI answers. Three points to plan around:

  1. 01It is a small, specific source.AI engines cite Reddit mostly when a renter compares communities, and mostly from local subreddits.
  2. 02Authentic participation is the only kind Reddit allows. Its rules forbid misleading posts and content manipulation, and each subreddit sets its own rules on promotion.
  3. 03Nothing here needs a budget.Every step below is free, and none of it involves ads or paid posts.

How to do it

Examples of taking part within Reddit's rules

These are examples of what taking part can look like, not a checklist. Every subreddit has its own rules, so read them before posting.

  • Posting from the community's own, clearly named account. Neighborhood news, a park or restaurant opening nearby, or an event at the community. Reddit Pro, which is free for eligible businesses, can show where your area is being discussed.[8]
  • Listening for renters' questions in the local subreddits. A city's main subreddit, a neighborhood subreddit, or a subreddit where people moving to the area ask questions. Look for the ones your team knows well: what the area is like, parking, commutes, noise.
  • Being a useful local resource. Answer the question that was asked, and mention the community only when someone asks for a recommendation.
  • Being open about who is posting. Say you work at the community. Reddit's rules forbid misleading others or impersonating anyone,[6] so a team member never posts as a resident.
  • Replying calmly when a thread is critical. Thank the person, give the facts, and take the details offline. A measured reply in public reads well to the next renter.
  • Never planting posts, buying upvotes or paying for mentions. Reddit treats these as content manipulation, and they draw the opposite of the attention the poster wanted.

Questions

Common questions

Should we advertise on Reddit to appear in AI answers?

This guide covers taking part, not advertising. AI engines cite Reddit threads, and nothing in our measurements links paid placements on Reddit to being cited or named by an AI engine.

Can our staff or residents post about the community?

Staff can, as long as they say who they are: Reddit's rules forbid misleading others or impersonating anyone.[6] Residents are welcome to share their own experience, but never ask them to post, and never offer anything in return.

ChatGPT has stopped citing Reddit. Is it still worth our time?

Reddit's share of ChatGPT's citations across all topics fell sharply in August 2026,[1] and Google AI Overviews still cites it.[2] In our apartment measurements both AI engines cite it at a small rate, mostly for comparisons. A helpful answer in a local thread also reaches the renters reading it, so a little time each month in your local subreddits is worth it whatever the AI engines do.

Which subreddits should we join?

The local ones where renters already ask questions about your area: the city or town's main subreddit, any neighborhood subreddit, and subreddits where people moving to the area or working at a large local employer ask for advice. Read each one's rules first, including whether it allows posts from businesses at all.
